Children- Prayer(Salah)

We need to train our children from childhood to pray. And our children will pray only if they see their parents pray. If we parents do not pray and then we start commanding our children to pray, the first question they will ask is “ I do not see you pray, then why are you asking me to do the same.” Isn’t that an obvious question?

Parents are responsible in bringing up children.

It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar that the Prophet (May be upon him) said: “Beware. Every one of you is a shepherd and everyone is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects (as to how he conducted their affairs). A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shall be questioned about them (as to how he looked after their physical and moral well-being). A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them (as to how she managed the household and brought up the children). A slave is a guardian over the property of his master and shall be questioned about it (as to how he safeguarded his trust). Beware, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you shall be questioned with regard to his trust. “(MUSLIM)

Parents are the first role models for children. And the house is the best madrassa/Sunday school for our children. We need to practice our religion sincerely for the sake of Allah, only then our children will learn. We cannot completely rely on the madrassa and feel that our children will learn everything from there. And we do not have to wait to send our children to madrassa. From a very young age we can start teaching them all about Islam. And the best way is to be an excellent role model.

Prophet Mohammed (saw) said: “Oder your children to pray at the age of seven, hit them to do so at the age of ten, and separate them (boys and girls) in their beds.” (Bukhari)

If we ask our children suddenly when they are seven years old to start praying and give up unIslamic practices, THEY WILL NEVER LISTEN TO US. They will listen only if they have seen us pray regularly from their childhood and have been trained to live islamic lives.

The Prophet Mohammed(SAW) said: “ A man will be raised some degrees in paradise and he will say, ‘ for what reason I am receiving this?’ He will be told, ‘because of your son asking forgiveness for you.” (BUKHARI)

If we want our children to pray for us after our death, we should instill in them from childhood all about Islam and the value of parents in Islam.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allâh, but do that which they are commanded.” (66:6)

  1. VERY NICE SHEJI,ITS SO TRUE,ALL MUSLIM MOTHERS SHOULD BE ROLE MADELS FOR THEIR CHILDREN.I PRAY TO ALLAH THAT HE MAKES US THOSE ROLE MODELS.AMEEN.

  2. Sunshine says:

I like every article that is about bringing children up according to islam.May Allah almighty help us in bringing our childern up according to His Teachings.

  3. I got this excellent point from a class i attended at the masjid.

When children are even few weeks old, make them lye near you when you are praying. so from childhood they will be accustomed to the actions of praying. So then the children will learn to pray as they grow older and parents would not have to force them alot provided they are adviced as to why they should pray.

Children can be asked to pray and thank Allah for having parents, the food they eat house,etc,etc..

Make children thank ALlah and not you when you gift them anything. from childhood they should realise that it is Allah who provides for everything…

  4. Allhamdulilla..
