The Degree of Accountability

Allah says in the Qur'an:

"O ye who believe! Fear Allah and let every soul look to what (provision) he has sent forth for the morrow. Yea, fear Allah: for Allah is well-acquainted with (all) that ye do." (59:18)

"Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it. (99:7-8)

3 Types of Soul Mentioned in the Qur'an:

  1. Soul Prone to Evil

    Allah says in the Qur'an:

"Nor do I absolve my own self (of blame): the (human soul) certainly prone to evil, unless my Lord do bestow His Mercy: but surely my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (12:53)

This kind of soul beautifies the sin to us and causes one to sin, this kind of soul will come in and justify the sin and if we try to control this soul moves to second level. This is the worst type of soul.

  2. Self – Reproaching Soul

    Allah says in the Qur'an:

"And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit;(Eschew Evil)." (75:2)

This soul will negate what we do. E.g. If we miss our fajr prayer one day, the soul will say no problem, we can pray tomorrow.

  3. Righteous Soul

    Allah says in the Qur'an:

"(To the righteous soul will be said: ) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!" (89:27)

This is the satisfied soul. This soul will do the right actions at the right time.  E.g. A person who is reciting Qur'an and then the Azan is called, he stops reciting and goes to pray.

Our Enemies

  1. Soul
  2. Satan

Ways to Cure Our Soul (Diseased)

  1. Ignore It: Ignore the soul that makes us feel that we are great, wealthy, famous, etc.
  2. Dislike It: We should weigh our blessings that has been bestowed upon us by Allah and compare what we done in terms of Ibadah! If smell were to come out of our sins, then none of us would be able to sit next to each other.
  3. Trick It: When we want to start good deeds, start it gradually. So in this way we can trick our soul.
  4. Use Skepticism: We should always doubt if our deeds are accepted. This will make us do more good deeds.

Ways Satan Leads us Astray

Allah says in the Qur'an:

"O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly; and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an avowed enemy." (2:208)

"O you who believe follow not Satan’s footsteps. If any will follow the footsteps of Satan, he will (but) command what is shameful and wrong…(24: 21)

  1. He beautifies things to us

E.g. Satan makes our job so beautiful for us that we are ready to go for work without Hijab, etc.

  2. He Promises us with poverty, etc.

    Allah says in the Qur'an:

“Satan threatens you with poverty and bids you to conduct unseemly. Allâh promises you His forgiveness and bounties. And Allâh cares for all and He knows all things.”(2:268)

“Whoever forsaking Allâh, takes Satan for a friend, has of a surety suffered a loss that is manifest. Satan makes them promises, and creates in them false desires; but Satan’s promises are nothing but deception. They (his dupes) will have their dwelling in Hell, and from it they will find no way of escape.”(4:119-121)

Accountability

To assess our current situation – where do we stand? Are we doing any good deeds or committing any sins? The time that we have wasted, we will pause and put our self to some accountability. Allah will judge each one of us and will be asked about each and every thing, tiny or big what we did. Our book of records will not leave anything good or bad, big or small out of our records. WE NEED TO TAKE ACCOUNT NOW – because we don’t know when our time is to leave this world. Close our eyes and ponder, if the angel of death comes to us now, are we ready to go now? Are we Prepared? Think, what is it that we need to do now as we are awakened and as we realize all the time that has been wasted. What is it that we need to do to get closer to Allah?

Umar ibn al-Khattâb said: “Call your souls to account before you are called to account and weigh your souls (i.e. your actions) before you are weighed for it will make the accountability easier for you tomorrow if you call your selves to account today” [Reported by Ahmad in his Musnad]

The Right of Allah upon the servant In Every Act of Obedience

  1. Sincerity in the action (for the sake of Allah alone).
  2. Pure devotion to Allah.
  3. Following and imitating the Messenger (SAW).
  4. Seeing and observing the excellence in the action.
  5. Seeing Allah's Benevolence in the action.
  6. Seeing one's shortcomings (in performing the action) after all of this.
