The Degree of Hope

Allah says in the Quràn:

“Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of.“ (17:57)

“For those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah, (in the Hereafter let them strive); for the Term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming: and He hears and knows (all things.)“ (29:5)

“Those who believed and those who suffered exile and fought (and strove and struggled) in the path of Allah,―they have the hope of the Mercy of Allah; and Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.“ (2:218)

Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit: The Prophet said, "Who-ever loves to meet Allah, Allah (too) loves to meet him and who-ever hates to meet Allah, Allah (too) hates to meet him." (Bukhari)

We should always be in the state of hope and fear of Allah.

Degrees of Iman

  1. Love
  2. Allah`s consciousness
  3. Hope for Allah`s mercy, rewards and forgiveness.

Kinds of Hope

  1. Working righteousness and hoping for a reward: This is the best kind of Hope.
  2. Repenting from a sin and hoping for a reward: Sincerely repenting and then hoping for Allah`s rewards.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, "My Mercy overpowers My Anger."(Bukhari)

Prophet (saw) said: "O son of Adam, as long as you call on Me and ask of Me, I will forgive what you have done, and I will forgive what you have done, and I do not mind. O son of Adam, even if your sins reached the clouds and you asked My forgiveness, I will forgive you. O son of Adam, if you came to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and you met Me without giving Me partners, I will give you a similar amount of forgiveness." (Tirmidhi)

  3. Hoping without performing
E.g. Hoping to go to Jannah without doing any righteous deeds, Not working thinking Allah will somehow find a way out for us for survival, etc.

  1. "God is enough for us! God will give us [whatever He wills] out of His bounty, and [will cause] His Apostle [to give us, too]: verily, unto God alone do we turn with hope!" (9:59)

"… and do not lose hope of God’s life-giving mercy: verily, none but people who deny the truth can ever lose hope of God’s life-giving mercy."(12:87)

"And do not do mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order, and invoke Him with fear and hope; Surely, Allâh’s Mercy is (ever) near unto the good-doers." (7:56)
