The Degree of Modesty

Allah says in the Qur'an:

"Afterwards one of the (damsels)
came (back) to him, walking bashfully… "
(28:25)

"And say to the believing women
that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not
display their beauty and ornaments except what (ordinarily) appear thereof; that
they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty
except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons,
their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters'
sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess or male
servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the
shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw
attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! Turn ye all together
towards Allah that ye may attain Bliss."
(24: 30-31)

Prophet (saw) was the best example of modesty. He was described as more modest
than a virgin behind her curtain.

Prophet (saw) said, "Modesty brings nothing but good." (Bukhari)

Three Degrees of Modesty

  1. Modesty that stems from the belief that Allah is watching you.
  2. Modesty that stems from Allah's specific togetherness.
  3. Modesty that stems from resorting to Allah alone.

Ten Types of Modesty

  1. Modesty upon sins: Adam (as) was shy to face Allah because of the sin they
    committed.
  2. Modesty upon shortcomings: Angels think they have shortcomings in spite of
    worshiping Allah day and night.
  3. Modesty upon knowledge: The 'ilm' will drive us closer to Allah. If the 'ilm'
does not produce any good, then check our self.
  4. Modesty upon decency: Ali (ra) had a wet dream. He was so shy to ask Nabi (saw)
what to do, that he asked another Sahaba to ask Him.
  5. Modesty upon dignity: Giving so much charity that surprises our self.
  6. Modesty upon oneself: A sin committed and repenting to Allah.
  7. Modesty upon love.
  8. Modesty upon generosity.
  9. Modesty upon enslavement.
  10. Modesty upon despising.

A female companion asked the Prophet (saw) personal questions despite her
modesty! Modesty is not that prevents you from asking necessary questions
regarding your religion.

Ibn Mas’ood (Radiyallahu An Hum narrates that the Prophet (Sallahu Alyhee Wa
Salaam) said, “Be bashful before Allah according to His right to modesty before
Him.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, verily we are shy, praise be to Allah.”
He said, “That is not it. Modesty before Allah according to His right to modesty
is that you perfect your mind in what it learns, your stomach in what it
ingests. And remember death and the tribulations attached to it. And whoever
wishes for the Hereafter, leaves the adornment of this life. So whoever does all
that is truly bashful before Allah."
(Tirmidhi)
