This verse means: No one attains any part of Allah’s knoweldge except what Allah conveys and allows. This includes knowledge about Allah and His attributes.

No room for arrogance or self-astonishment

“And say, O my Lord, Increase me in Knowledge” (20:114)

This part of the ayah indicated that angels, jinss and prophets do now know the knowledge of the unseen

  • The Angels did not know the names of the things that Allah taught Adam.

“And He taught Adam all the names (of everything), then He showed them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.” They (angels) said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise.” (2: 31-32)

  • The Jinn did not know about the death of Sulaiman (AS) until one year had passed.

“Then when We decreed death for him [Sulaimân (Solomon)], nothing informed them (jinn) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick, so when he fell down, the jinn saw clearly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment.” (34:14)

  • Adam and Hawa were deceived by Shaytan.

“Then the Shaitân (Satan) made them slip therefrom (the Paradise), and got them out from that in which they were. We said: “Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time.” (2: 36)

  • Yaqoob (AS) did not know about the fate of his son Yosuf (AS) and what exactly happened to him until many years had passed. (Surah Yousuf)
  • Musa (AS) ran away from his stick when he saw it moving like a demon.

“And throw your stick!” But when he saw it moving as if it were a snake, he turned in flight, and looked not back. (It was said): “O Mûsa (Moses)! Draw near, and fear not. Verily, you are of those who are secure. ( 28:31)
