The Eight Supplication: “O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and Your protection in this world and the next. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and Your protection in my religion, in my worldly affairs, in my family and in my wealth. O Allah, conceal my secrets and preserve me from anguish . O Allah , guard me from what is in front of me and behind me , from my left , and from my right , and from above me . I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being struck down from beneath me.”

Allah does not like the public mention of evil

Concealment of shortcoming and defects: “O Allah, conceal my imperfections.” اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي

Awrah in Arabic means any part of the body that is not to be exposed in public.

The primary meaning of this word in this du’a is imperfection, shortcoming or sin.

As a basic principle, Allah does not like the public mention of evil.

“Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged. And ever is Allah Hearing and Knowing.” (4: 148)

Those who expose their wrongdoings are denied forgiveness

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: “The Messenger of Allah said, “Every member of my nation will be forgiven, except those who expose their wrongdoings. An example of this is that of a man who commits a sin at night which Allah then conceals, but the next morning, he goes and says (to people): “I committed such and such a sin last night”- while Allah had kept it a secret. During the night Allah had concealed it, but in the morning, he tore up the cover provided by Allah Himself.” (Bukhari/Muslim)

Do not make it public and repent to Allah

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (RA) that the Prophet said: Refrain from these filthy matters (major sins) that Allah has forbidden. And whoever is tried by committing any of them, he should conceal it and repent to Allah, for whoever exposes himself to us, we will pass the judgments of Allah’s book upon him.” (Saheeh Al Jami)

What are the dangers of exposing one’s sins in public?

  • Exposing sins and bragging about them ecourages others to commit them.
  • It shows that the person does not care about the limits of Allah.
  • It is a sign that the person does not have any haya (modesty) which is a branch of Iman.

It is highly recommended to conceal the sins of others.

“Whoever conceals the fault of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his fault on the Day of Judgment.” (Bukhari/Muslim)

Allah’s Name: Assiteer

Assiteer means the one who conceals the sins and shortcomings of His servants.

Searching for Mistakes of other people

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) sent a stern warning against those who search for the mistakes of their brothers and sisters.

The Messenger of Allah said: “O those who believed with their tongues but Iman has not yet entered their hearts, do not backbite the Muslims and do not search for their mistakes, for indeed, whoever searches for their mistakes, Allah will seek out his faults, and whoever Allah seeks out his faults, He will disgrace him in his own home.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ahmed)
