Fasting for Kids

nointiIt was narrated that al-Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwidh said: On the morning of ‘Ashoora’ the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent word to the villages of the Ansaar saying, “Whoever started out not fasting, let him not eat for the rest of the day, and whoever started the day fasting, let him fast.” She said: We used to fast and make our children fast, [and take them to the mosques] and make toys for them out of wool, then if one of them cried for food we would give him that toy until iftaar. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1859; Muslim, 1136 – the words in square brackets were narrated by Muslim.)

How old were you when you fasted for the first time?
Did your child fast this Ramadan? How old is he/she? Share your child’s experience with us as well as your feeling being a parent, here

  1. I remember I fasted 29 days at the age of 9. I missed one because I stayed at neighbors house and they did not get up for Suhor:(

I have to ask my mom if I fasted before the age of 9:)

  2. I remember my mom telling me that my elder sister was soo stubborn to fast that she fasted one day at the age of 3:) Subhan Allah!

  3. as salaam ‘alaikum . . . I have my two girls fasting at the age of 3, masha’Allah – the first day was for 1 hour after waking and I keep them busy with a SoundVision video about Adam fasting Ramadhan; the second day was for 2 hours and I keep them busy with their early education materials/lessons; the third day was for 3 hours, and they have maintained it since, masha’Allah. I feel that 1 hour/year of age is enough and they love breaking their fast with dates and soymilk, and happily declare "We fasted for 3 HOURS!", masha’Allah. 🙂 . And when waking, they eagerly say, "We are fasting. Momma is fasting. Baba is fasting."

  5. Bismillah!
    Assalamu’aleikum warahmatulahi wabarakatuhu,
I do not remember the age but I remember fasting from very young when we did not have school and slowly but surely even during school. Doing it with the rest of my siblings made it fun and easy. Besides, we were helping one another in being patient and courageous. My mom always used to prepare some special dishes to make it all the more rewarding at the end of the day. That is how I grew up to loooove fasting.

  10. Assalaamu alaikom wa Raghmatoellaa hiw wa barakaatoe. I have 3 kids 12yrs, 9yrs and 6yrs. My little girl fasting for the 1rs time this year.I teach madressa for the gr 1s and as some motivation I have drawn a chart with a mountain explaining to them that everyday they climbing the mountain and on the 15th day they reach the top. Then they move down where on eid they’ll get a lovely surprise. They kids are all competing with 1 another and it’s very exciting when they get to class to see who is in the lead. I also inform them of all the little 1s suffering at the hands of oppressors throughout the world. My little 1 will tell me "mommy I’m hungry" then I’ll tell her that she may break her fast knowing that her reply will be "no mommy I’m strong I’m fasting for the ℓ♡̬̩̃̊√ε of Allah " all our kids are so sweet and special may Allah swt reward them and except all the efforts parents put in to train their little 1s.

  11. Shaheeda Fryddie says:

I still have 2 kids at home. They both started fasting at the age of 5. First half day, then 1 day half and 1 day full. By the age of 7 they fasted full day for the whole month. They go to an Islamic school so it was easy as everyone is fasting and there is no tuck shop.

  12. Walaiakum Assalam Warahmatullahi wabarakatu

I don’t remember since when I started fasting but my Ramadan has taken more than one whole circle of the Gregorian calendar.
My 11 years old daughter started fasting when she was 7. But used to fast for one day or two or on holidays. This year she has left 2 till date.
My son who is 7 has fasted one day and planning to add more after examination that ends tomorrow.
Please pray for them to respect Ramadan.
