Fasting on 9th and 10th of Muharram

Why should we fast on 10th of Muharram?

Ibn ‘Abbas (Allaah be pleased with him) reported that when Allaah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) came to Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of ashura. They (the Jews) were asked about it and they said: It is the day on which Allaah granted victory to Moses and (his people) Bani Isra’il over the Pharaoh and we observe fast out of gratitude to Him. Upon this the Prophet of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have, and he commanded to observe fast on this day. (Muslim)

Fasting on 9th of Muharram

Ibn ‘Abbas (Allaah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) fasted on the day of ‘Ashura and commanded that it should be observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allaah, it is a day which the jews and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th. But the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) died before the advent of the next year. (Muslim)

Fasting on 9th and 10th of Muharram

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that we should fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community. (At-Tirmidhi)

Virtues of Fasting in Muharram

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of `Ashura’ (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year”. (Muslim)

Abu Huraira (Allaah be pleased with him) reported Allaah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God’s month, al-muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night. (Muslim)

Ashura: The word ‘ashura literally means “10th,” as it is on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year.

    Salam Sister,

We have advised to take fast on 9th , 10th and 11th of Muharam in last Friday kuthubah.
Rewards have been categorized by the following:-
1)who ever takes fast on 9th,10th and 11th will have greater reward.
    2)Then comes either 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th.
    and last comes
3)Then comes On 10th of Muharam.

I haven’t heard anything of taking fast on 11th of Muharam…Please clarify on this if you know about it.

Indeed what ever we do with good intention will be rewarded.

    Jazak Allah

    Ghassan

  3. walaiakum assalam brother Ghassan

JazakAllahu Khairan for sharing with us what you heard during the khutbah:)

Even I have read the same:

It is noteworthy that Muslim scholars have stated that fasting of `Ashura’ is of three levels as follows:

    1. fasting for three days, i.e., on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of Muharram,

    2. fasting the 9th and 10th of Muharram, and

    3. fasting only the 10th of Muharram.

But details have not been mentioned specifically as to 11th.

But since we know the most excellent fast after Ramadan is God’s month, al-muharram, the scholars are encouraging us to fast as much as possible.

I have even read this, I do not remember the source, but it said that if we forgot to fast on 9th, so not to single out 10th, fast 10th and 11th.

It can even be like since 10th is a friday, so not to single out fasting on friday, the scholars are encouraging us to fast a day before and after friday. As we are not allowed to fast on friday alone.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Salam Sister,

JazakAllahu Khairan for immediate response on the subject "Fasting on Muharam" as we are heading to these in days times.

I couldn’t find any hadeeth mentioning to fast on all three days as Prophet (pbuh) said he would fast on 9th next year in addition to fasting on Aashoora. Allah knows the best.

Insha Allah lets make this forum interactive to learn more about Islam and Preachings of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh).

    Jazak Allah Khair

But the message from brother Asif Dange gives the dates as 23/24 November. Cannot understand the difference as he is also in Mumbai, India.
