The Eight of Zhul-Hijjah
- This day Hajj begins.
- Its Name: Yawmut- Taraweyah- Day of watering and getting ready for Arafah.
- Assume Ihram where ever you are in Makkah and leave for Mina.
- Spend this day in Mina.
- 5 Prayers are offered in Mina- Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr of the 9th. Pray each prayer in its own time, but shorted Dhuhr, Asr and Isha.Narrated ‘Abdur Rahman bin Yazid: We offered a four Rakat prayer at Mina behind Ibn ‘Affan. ‘Abdullah bin Masud was informed about it. He said sadly, “Truly to Allah we belong and truly to Him we shall return.” And added, “I prayed two Rakat with Allah’s Apostle at Mina and similarly with Abu Bakr and with ‘Umar (during their caliphates).” He further said, “May I be lucky enough to have two of the four Rakat accepted (by Allah).” (Bukhari)
- Hajj has started- be engaged in as much Ibadah as possible: e.g. dua, dhikr, reciting Qur’an, etc
The Ninth of Zhul-Hijjah
- Its name: Yawmu Arafah- Day of Arafah.
- It is the most important day of Hajj. If missed, Hajj must be repeated another year.
- Leave Mina after sunrise for Arafah.
- Pray Dhuhr and Asr in Arafah- combine and shorten them, One azan and two iqamah.
- Make as much Du’a as possible in Arafah.
- Remain in Arafah until after sunset, then leave to Muzdalifah. Do not leave Arafah before sunset. Be sure to remain within the boundaries of Arafah.
- Do not pray Maghrib in Arafah.
Muzdalifah
- Upon arrival in Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha. Combine them and shorten Isha.
Ubaidullah b. ‘Abdullah b. ‘Umar reported on the authority of his father (Allah be pleased with them) that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) combined the sunset and ‘Isha’, prayers at Muzdalifa and there was no prostration (i. e. any rak’ahs of Sunan or Nawafil prayers) in between them. He observed three rak’ahs of the sunset prayer and two rak’ahs of the ‘Isha’ prayer, and ‘Abdullah (b. ‘Umar) observed the prayers in this very manner (at Muzdalifa) until he met his Lord. (Bukhari)
- Spend the night in Muzdalifah- the Sunnah is to the sleep after praying.
- After fajr on the 10t of Zhul-Hijjah, make Du’a in Muzdalifah then leave for Mina some time before sunrise.
- It is convenient to pick up the pebbles to stone the Jamarat in Muzdalifah. It is not Fard (obligatory). The pebbles can be picked up anywhere.
Tenth of Zhul-Hijjah
- Its Name: Yaqmun Nahr- Day of Sacrifice
- Upon arrival in Mina, do the following:
- Pelt the largest Jamarah only (7 pebbels). While Pelting say Allahu Akbar.
- Offer the Sacrifice (if you have to, Hajj Ifrad does not need a sacrifice)
- Shave head or shorten hair- this brings the person out of the state of Ihram. Shaving is better, because it is the Sunnah.Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s Apostle said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Apostle! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Apostle! And those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet said (the third time), “And to those who get their hair cut short.” Nafi’ said that the Prophet had said once or twice, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved,” and on the fourth time he added, “And to those who have their hair cut short.” (Bukhari)
- Now all the restrictions of Ihram are lifted except sexual intercourse. This is called “At-Tahallul – Al- Awwal”.
Tawaful Efaadah
After this Tawaf, sexual intercourse in permitted. This Tawaf can be performed on the 10th of Zhul-Hijjah or any time afterwards. If you are doing Hajj Tamatt’u, you must also do Sa’ee with Tawaful Efaadah. If you are doing Hajj Qiran, you do not have to do Sa’ee with Tawaaf ul-Efaadah. If you are doing Hajj Ifrad and you did Sa’ee with Tawaaful Qudoom, you do not have to do it with Tawaful Effadah, but if you did not do Sa’ee with Tawwaful Qudoom, you must do Sa’ee with Tawaaful Efaadah.
Note: The above order is the Sunnah. However, if one mixes them up unintentionally, nothing is wrong.
Eleventh, Twelth and Thirteenth of Zhul Hijjah
- Their names: Ayyamut- Tashreeq-Days of drying the meat.
- On all the three days pelt all 3 Jamarat, 7 pebbles each, starting with the smallest. Recite Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) when throwing each pebble. The time of this is from the time of Dhuhr. The sunnah is to make Du’a after pelting the first and second Jamarat, but NOT after the third!Narrated Salim bin Abdullah: ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar used to do Rami of the Jamrat-ud-Dunya with seven small pebbles and used to recite Takbir on throwing each stone. He, then, would proceed further till he reached the level ground, where he would stay for a long time, facing the Qibla to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Wusta similarly and would go to the left towards the level ground, where he would stand for a long time facing the Qibla to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-‘Aqaba from the middle of the valley, but he would not stay by it. Ibn ‘Umar used to say, “I saw Allah’s Apostle doing like that.” (Bukhari)
- One can leave Mina on the 12th with one condition- one must leave Mina before sunset. But the sunnah is to stay until the 13th.
- It is compulsory to spend the nights of these days in Mina.
Tawaaf Al-Wadaa
- It is compulsory.
- It must be done just prior to leaving Makkah, when one intends to leave Makkah for home.
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The people were ordered to perform the Tawaf of the Ka’ba (Tawaf-al-Wada’) as the lastly thing, before leaving (Mecca), except the menstruating women who were excused. (Bukhari)
Life After Hajj
If Hajj is performed in the correct manner, according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), with sincerity and devotion, avoiding all evil and indecent deeds, then Insha Allah, it will be accepted by Allah.
And as a result all one’s sins will be Forgiven. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Whoever performs Hajj to this Ka’ba and does not approach his wife for sexual relations nor commit sins (while performing Hajj), he will come out as sinless as a new-born child, (just delivered by his mother).” (Bukhari)
Try very hard to preserve that clean and pure state, by living the rest of one’s life after Hajj, in a manner that is pleasing to Allah the Exalted.
Conclusion
Every Muslim must strive very hard to ensure that he/she performs Hajj in accordance with the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Take (learn) from me your Manasik (Rites of Hajj).
May Allah accept the Hajj of all Muslims. Ameen
