The Third Supplication (Morning/Evening)

Allaahumma ‘Anta Rabbee laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa ‘Anta, khalaqtanee wa ‘anaa ‘abduka, wa ‘anaa ‘alaa ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mas-tata’tu, ‘a’oothu bika min sharri maa sana’tu, ‘aboo’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa ‘aboo’u bithanbee faghfir lee fa’innahu laa yaghfiruththunooba ‘illaa ‘Anta

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship but You. You created me and I am your slave. I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to You so far as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I admit to Your blessings upon me, and I admit to my misdeeds. Forgive me, for there is none who may forgive sins but You.

Status of this Supplication:  This dua’ is called the master supplication of seeking forgiveness.

Allah’s Messenger said about it: “Whoever recites this with conviction in the evening and dies during that night shall enter Paradise, and whoever recites it with conviction in the morning and dies during that day shall enter Paradise.”  (Al-Bukhari)

Explanation of this Supplication

When saying: “O Allah, You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship but You.”

  • The servant of Allah is acknowledging Tawheed ar- Ruboobiyah (The Lordship of Allah)
  • The believer who recites this du’a is also affirming his belief in Tawheed al Uloohiyah (Allah ultimate right to be worshipped alone without any partner)

When saying: “You created me and I am your slave.”

  • The believer affirms that servitude of worship is only for Allah, since Allah created son of Adam for Himself and for His Ibadah.

When saying: “I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to You so far as I am able.”

  • The believer is affirming his belief in the covenant that Allah made with His servants in which He set out commands and prohibitions.
  • Allah promised his servants if they fulfill this covenant, that He would reward them with Jannah.
  • So basically, the servant is promising Allah to fulfill his covenant with Him and he is attesting to Allah promise (confirmation of his belief in Allah promise)

When saying: “I seek Your protection from the evil that I have done.”

  • The servant admits his own mistakes/sins.
  • This is the first step in any problem solving process.
  • He is attributing evil to his own actions and not to His Lord.
  • This attribution is in line with what the Prophet (SAW) said in one of his supplications: “And evil is not attributed to You.”

When saying: “I admit to Your blessings upon me, and I admit to my misdeeds.”

  • The servant ackowledges the favors/blessings of Allah upon him.
  • Then he confesses his sins again for the second time.
  • Then he asks Allah to forgive him by saying: “so forgive me for no one forgives sins except You.”
