The Sixth Supplication
“O Allah, make me healthy in my body. O Allah, preserve for me my hearing. O Allah, preserve for me my sight. There is none worthy of worship but You . (Recite three times in Arabic.)
O Allah , I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave . There is none worthy of worship but You.” (Recite three times in Arabic.)
The Hadith of this Du’a
Narrated by AbdurRahman ibn Abee Bakra (RA). The son asked his father, why do you recite this dua’ every morning and every evening. The father replied: “I heard the Messenger of Allah using these words in his dua’ and I like to follow his sunnah.” (Abu Dawud)
Meanings and Beauty
“O Allah make me healthy in my body”
- Good Health in Islam: Good health is viewed as one of the greatest blessings that Allah has bestowed on mankind. Allah has entrusted us with our bodies for a specific period of time. It is a favour that we take for granted.
- Beautiful Arabic Proverb: “Good health is a crown that is placed on the head of every healthy person, that can only be seen by the sick.”
- Held accountable: Allah will take us to account about the treatment of our bodies. How we looked after and utlized them.
“No one will be allowed to move from his position on the Day of Judgment until he is asked: how he spent his life, how he used his knowledge, how he earned and spent his money, and finally how he utilized his body.” (Tirmidhi)
The Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There are two blessings the majority of mankind have been deceived concerning.” The majority of mankind do not appreciate these two blessings. They are “health,” good health, “and free time.”
Healthy measures to maintain well-being
- Diet and Nutrition: Eating of healthy wholesome food and eating in moderation are two habits that are highly promoted in Shariah.
Allah says, which means: “O Mankind, eat from whatever is one earth that is lawful and wholesome and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (Al Baqarah:168)
Allah also said, which means: “O you have believed, eat from the good things which we have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah if it is (indeed) Him that you worship.” (Al Baqarah: 172)
A healthy nutritious diet must be balanced. Eating excessively causes harm to our system.
Allah says, which means: “And eat and drink, but avoid excess.” (Al Araf: 31)
Over indulgence and wasting of food are not appreciated in Islam. The Prophet (SAW): “No human being has ever filled a container worse than his own stomach. The son of Adam needs no more than a few morsels of food to keep up his strength, doing so he should consider that a third of his stomach is for food, a third for drink and another third of breathing.” (Ibn Majah)
- Fasting: Fasting is an ideal time to remove impurities. Many processed foods we eat contain chemicals which over time can be stored by our bodies as toxins within cells.
Fasting can assist our body to purge these toxins. It also allows our digestive system to rest. Research has proven that fasting can lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol.
- Prohibition of Intoxicants: Islam strictly forbids indulgence in intoxicants such as alcohol and drugs for good reasons. The limited pleasure of these substances causes immense long term damage.
Some schools of though have included smoking within the list of prohibitions because of its harmful affects on the body.
