Part 12 (e): The Sixth Supplication- The Divine Protection

2. Minor Kufr
It is also called “Kufr in Action”: Minor kufr takes place in the form of major sins. Therefore, this type of kufr does not nullify one’s Islam.
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Abusing the honour of a Muslim verbally is a form of fiaq (disobedience), and fighting with him is a form of kufr.” (Bukhari/Muslim)
However, Allah said: “And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two.” (Al Hujuraat:9)
In the hadith, fighting anohter Muslim is called Kufr while Iman is still attributed to them in Surah Al Hujuraat.
Some forms of Minor Kufr
- False accusation about a person’s lineage.
- Lamentation of the dead The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Two things, if practiced by people are manifestation of kufr: false accusation about a person’s lineage and lamentation of the dead.” (Saheeh Al Jami)
- Seeking guidance from fortune-tellers The Messenge of Allah (SAW) said: “If a person seeks guidance from a soothsayer or a fortune-teller and believes in him or her, he commits kufr in what was revealed to Muhammad.” (Sahih Al Jami)
- Swearing by other than Allah
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “He who swears by other than Allah, commits an act of kufr, or shirk.” (Tirmidhi)
Some Manifestations of Major Kufr
- To associate partners with Allah: Allah says: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills…” (Al Nisa: 116)
- To rely on mediators between oneself and Allah: They supplicate to them and they see it necessary to worship Allah through their medidation. Allah says: Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due? But those who take for protectors other than Allah (say): “We only serve them in order that they may bring us nearer to Allah.” Truly Allah will judge between them in that wherein they differ. But Allah guides not such as are false and ungrateful.” (As-Zumar:3)
- To refuse to condemn the kufr of those who associate partners with Allah, or to doubt that they are disbelievers, or to approve of their religion is a form of disbelief.
- To believe that there is a more perfect guidance than the one brought by the Prophet (SAW).
- To dislike any part of the revelation, even though one may act upon it, is a form of disbelief: Allah says: “That is because they hate that which Allah has sent down; so He has made their deeds fruitless.” (Muhammad: 9)
- Mocking any part of the deen or any aspect of reward or punishment: Allah says: “Say: Was it at Allah, his ayaat and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse! You have disbelived after you had believed.” (At Tawba: 65-66)
- Practicing magic is a proof of disbelief:
“…but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]…” (Al Baqara:102)
- Helping and assisting the disbelievers in overcoming the believers:
Allah says: “O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.” (Al Maidah:51)
- To believe that it is not necessary to follow the Prophet (SAW): and that it is permissible to step outside the law of Allah.
- Wilful neglect of Allah deen, neither learning it nor acting upon it:
“And who is more upset than one who is reminded of the verses of His lord, then he turns way from them? Indeed, from the criminals, We will take retribution.” (As Sajda: 22)
