Allah says in the Qur'an:

"If ye (but) eschew the most heinous of the things which ye are forbidden to do, We shall expel out of you all the evil in you and admit you to a Gate of great honour." (4:31)

Eschew: Avoid; Heinous: Extremely Wicked

"Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, Only (falling into) small faults–verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness…" (53:32)

Types of Kufr

  1. Kufr based on belief- Major Kufr (Shirk, not praying, etc)
  2. Kufr based on disbelief- Minor Kufr (showing off, arrogant,etc)

Major Sins

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." They (the people!) asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What are they?" He said,

  1. "To join partners in worship with Allah;
  2. to practice sorcery;
  3. to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law);
  4. to eat up usury (Riba),
  5. to eat up the property of an orphan;
  6. to give one's back to the enemy and freeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and
  7. to accuse women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers."

(Bukhari, 6425)

Some of the other Major Sins

Not praying, Disrespect to Parents, Homosexuality, Lying about Allah and Prophets, Bearing False Witness, Drinking Wine, Gambling, Stealing, Committing Suicide, Women imitating men and vice versa, Not protecting oneself from urine, Men wearing silk and gold, Showing off, Concealing knowledge learnt, Spying, Cursing, Believing in fortune teller, Oppression, Slaughtering animal not in the name of Allah, Learning knowledge just for the sake of the world, etc.

Effects of Committing Sins

  1. Prevention of Knowledge: Knowledge is light which Allah throws on the obedient. If he is disobedient, then Allah does not allow him to acquire knowledge.
  2. Prevention of Sustenance: Disobedience to Allah causes poverty. If we fear Allah, He will make way for us from all troubles.

    Allah says in the Qur'an:

    "..And for those who fear Allah, He (ever) prepares a way out." (65:2)

  3. Prevention of Obedience: Allah prevents us from being obedient to Him when we commit sins.
  4. Weakens the Heart and Body: Being disobedient to Allah by committing numerous sins weakens our heart and body.
  5. Reduces the Lifespan and Destroys Blessings: Being disobedient to Allah reduces our lifespan. If we keep good relations with our kith and kin, our lifespan increases.
  6. Ill-effects of the sinner falls upon those besides him: E.g. Story of Prophet Musa (AS)

If our Iman is strong, we feel miserable on committing a major or minor sin. But if our Iman is weak, we do not feel sad or regret for it at all.

Hasan Al Basri used to say “do not look at the magnitude of the sin but look at the magnitude of the one you have committed the sin against."
