Tawaf

  1. Its Excellence: the fact that it is an essential part of Hajj and Umrah proves its excellence.
  2. Pre-requisites of Tawaf
    • Wudu.
    • Covering the Awrah.
    • Completing 7 circuits.
    • Begin and end at the Black Stone.
    • While walking the Ka’bah should be on the left side.
    • Walk around the Ka’bah (but not within the Hijr)
  3. Sunnah of Tawaf
  • Face the Black Stone, raise hands towards it, say Takbeer

Narrated Ibn Abbas: Allah’s Apostle performed Tawaf (of the Kaba) ending a camel (at that time the Prophet had foot injury). Whenever he came to the Corner (having the Black Stone) he would point out towards it with a thing in his hand and say, “Allahu-Akbar.” (Bukhari)

  • Al-Idtibaa- showing the right shoulder for the first 3 circuits of the Ka’bah of the very first tawaaf, for men only.
  • Raml-Jogging, if possible, in those first 3 rounds, but walk between the Ruknal-Yamaanee (Yemeni Corner) and the Black Stone.

Narrated Salim that his father said: I saw Allah’s Apostle arriving at Mecca; he kissed the Black Stone Corner first while doing Tawaf and did ramal in the first three rounds of the seven rounds (of Tawaf). (Bukhari)

  • Pray 2 rakats after Tawaf behind the Maqaam of Ibrahim.

Narrated Ibn Umar: The Prophet reached Mecca, circumambulated the Kaba seven times and then offered a two Rakat prayer behind Maqam ibrahim. Then he went towards the Safa. Allah has said, “Verily, in Allah’s Apostle you have a good example.” (Bukhari)

  • Kissing, touching, or pointing to the Black Stone, touching the Yemeni corner

Narrated ‘Abis bin Rabia: ‘Umar came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said “No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Allah’s Apostle kissing you I would not have kissed you.”  (Bukhari)

  • Reciting as much Du’a as possible- reciting Quran.
  • If any round of Tawaf is interuppted, for Salah, Wudu, etc continue from where the interruption occurred.

“If some one breaks his wudu either while he is doing tawaf, or when he has finished tawaf but before he has prayed the two rakas of tawaf, he should do wudu and begin the tawaf and the two rakas afresh. Breaking wudu does not interrupt say between Safa and Marwa, but a person should not begin say unless he is pure by being in wudu.” (Malik)
