Part 12 (a): Curing oneself of Hatred- Heart Therapy

Read the Table of Contents of Heart Therapy

Read Part 12: Bughd (Hatred)

One can cure oneself of bughd via a number of ways:

  • Islam encourages mutual love: Allah SWT has praised those who love each other for His sake and has attached great rewards for that.

The Prophet SAW mentions the seven types of people whom Allah will shade on the Day when there is no shade but His. From among them are, ‘…two men who love one another for the sake of Allah, meeting for His sake and parting for His sake.’ [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Likewise, Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported from the Prophet, ‘A man went to visit a brother of his in another village. Allah sent an angel to wait for him on the road. When the man came alone, the angel asked him, “Where do you intend to go?” He said,, “I am going to visit a brother of mine who lives in this village.” The angel asked, “Have you done him any favour [for which you are now seeking repayment]?” He said, “No. I just love him for the sake of Allah.” The angel told him, “I am a messenger to you from Allah, sent to tell you that He loves you as you love your brother for His sake.”” [Muslim]

  • Du’a for the one he hates: He should sit in private and ask Allah for good for this person. This action is contrary to what he feels and as such it will facilitate him to force his hatred out of his soul.
  • Du’a for Divine assistance: After deciding that one wants to truly get rid of this evil characteristic, one should take recourse in supplication and ask Allah to assist him in overcoming this hatred.
  • Actions that defy his hatred: One should strive against his soul to desist from acting upon the hatred that the feels. Instead, he should try and act contrary to his feelings and when tempted to speak ill of the person, attempt to praise him instead.

Alhamdulillah, with this we come to the end of Heart Therapy. We hope and pray that you all enjoyed reading it and benefited it in the same way we did.

JazakAllahu Khairan for all the support and prayers.
