Read Part 5 (b): Tafseer of Ayatul Kursi (Verse 3)

Verse 4

لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ

“To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.”

The Owner of the heavens and the earth

The following points could be deducted from this statement:

  • Everything is owned by Allah and that property in the absolute sense belongs to Him and to Him alone.
  • He has the ultimate ownership of the universe
  • Allah is Al Maalik and He is Al Malik:
    • Al Maalik means the Owner
    • Al Malik means the King
  • His ownership is perfect and complete.
  • A human king is someone who rules but does not own everything, His authority is limited.
  • A human owner is someone who owns but does not rule. His owndership is limited and restricted.

An Arab who owned a herd of camels was once asked, “Whose camels are these?” He said, “They belong to Allah, but they are in my hand.”

Ownership and Kingdom

Allah owns and grants ownership to whomever he wishes.

Say, “O Allah, Owner of the Kingdom, You give kingdom to whom You will and You take kingdom away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humiliate whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Verily, you are Able to do all things. (Al Imran: 26)
