Read The Table of Contents

Read the previous Part 12 (c): The Sixth Supplication

The Sixth Supplication: “O Allah, make me healthy in my body. O Allah, preserve for me my hearing. O Allah, preserve for me my sight. There is none worthy of worship but You. O Allah , I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave . There is none worthy of worship but You.”

Meaning and Beauty

“O Allah , I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty”

Essence of Disbelief (Definition): The word “kafara” means: to cover up something.

The disbeliever is called “kafir” because:

  • He is covering the truth or,
  • He is covering up his own heart.

Legally: A kafir is a person who refuses to accept the dominion and authority of Allah.

  1. Greater Kufr:

    • Kufr of denial/rejection: Allah says, which means:

“And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches him? Is there not a home in Hell for those who reject Faith?” (Al Ankabut: 68)

      This might take different forms:

      • Denying the Uluhiya of Allah
      • Denying the Messenger (SAW)
      • Denying a well established and major shariah ruling.
    • Kufr of arrogance with recognition: Allah says, which means:

“And behold, We said to the angels: “Bow down to Adam” and they bowed down. Not so Iblis: he refused and was haughty: He was of those who reject Faith.” (Al Baqarah: 34)

Iblis became a kaafir because of his arrogance.

    • Kufr of doubtfulness: It could be manifested in different ways:
      • To hesitate with regard to following the truth
      • Being uncertain as to whether the religion is true or not
      • Do not care. Do not mkae an effort to search for the truth

        Allah says, which means:

“He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, “I deem not that this will ever perish,”Nor do I deem that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) come: Even if I am brought back to my Lord, I shall surely find (there) something better in exchange.” His companion said to him, in the course of the argument with him: “Dost thou deny Him Who created thee out of dust, then out of a sperm-drop, then fashioned thee into a man?”(Al Kahf: 35-37)

    • Kufr of Aversion: Allah says, which means, “And those who disbelieve turn away from what they have been warned with aversion.” (Al Ahqaf:3)

When the truth is explained to you, do not turn away. Take your time and give it to some thought.

    • Kufr of Hypocrisy: It happens when a person accepts Islam outwardly, but they reject it within themselves.

Allah says, which means, “This is because they first believed, then disbelieved. So a seal was set upon their hearts and consequently they do not understand.” (Al Munafiqun:3)

What are the symptoms of minor hypocrisy?

      • Whenever he/she talks, they would include a lie.
      • Whenever they make a promise, they would break it.
      • Whenever they have a dispute, they cross the boundaries of Islamic etiquettes.
      • Whenever they are trusted with something, they break the trust. (Hadith)
