The Ninth Supplication: O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the evident , Maker of the heavens and the earth , Lord of everything and its Possessor , I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You . I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his helpers . (I seek refuge in You) from bringing evil upon my soul and from harming any Muslim.

“I seek refuge from the evil of Satan and his (helpers/shirk/plots)”

Does Satan have helpers?

Some of them are leaders and have soldiers and helpers.

Jabir reported that Allaah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: iblis places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments (for creating dissension) ; the nearer to him in tank are those who are most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: I did so and so. And he says: You have done nothing. Then one amongst them comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between a husband and a wife. The Satan goes near him and says: ‘You have done well. A’mash said: He then embraces him. (Sahih Muslim)

Shirk

Here it means his invitations to commit shirk or his way that lead to committing shirk.

What are his Devious Plots?

Allah says, which means:

“And do not follow the footsteps of Satan for he is to you an open enemy” (2:168)

Footsteps of Satan include:

  1. Evil of kufr/shirk and enmity towards Allah and His Messenger.
  2. Innovation and it is more beloved to him than sins.
  3. Major sins.
  4. Minor sins.
  5. Inviting people to get busy with permissible acts.
  6. Inviting them to perform less preferred acts of Ibadah.

For example, he might invite the believers to recite Qur’an at the time of Janazah prayer.
