Three times

Narrated Anas:Whenever the Prophet ( Peace Be Upon Him ) spoke a sentence (said a thing), he used to repeat it thrice so that the people could understand it properly from him and whenever he asked permission to enter, (he knocked the door) thrice with greeting. ( Bukhari)

  1. SUBHAN ALLAH.

  2. We should make sure that our children develop this habit of knocking the door thrice before opening. They will learn only if we set an example for them, by seeing us.

I was told in a class that, if we go to someones house, we should knock the door 3 times. Even if we hear somebody inside and they do not open the door, we should leave. Its their privacy and we need not question them as to why they did not open the door.

Masha Allah Sister Shayistha i agree with u.

  4. Sheharzad says:

So true, Many a times i have come across situatuons where people just open the door and come and i am running for my hijab !!! Ofcourse i cant tell them " Y cant u ring the bell" so i ask very casually, "i think the door bell is not working, i dint hear the bell ringing" so that it strikes a cord in them , Inshallah.
Yes, even it is your own house, or your moms, or ur brothers or whoevers, we have to knock the door so that the people inside are ready to greet us.

  5. 27. O you who believe! Enter not houses other than your own, until you have asked permission and greeted those in them; that is better for you, in order that you may remember.
    28. And if you find no one therein, still enter not until permission has been given. And if you are asked to go back, go back, for it is purer for you. And Allah is All-Knower of what you do.
    [Surah An-Nur]
